Why Is the Car Heather Blowing Cold Air?

Among some problems that you face in your car, car heater blowing cold air has become one of the most common problems. There are some reasons that can explain why your car heater blows cold air instead of warm air.

Lack of Coolant

When your car heater blows cold air instead of warm or hot air, the first thing that you have to check is the coolant. When you don’t have enough coolant, your car heater will also stop working in providing warm air. What is the relation between coolant and the heater? As we know that car uses coolant that consists of 50% antifreeze and 50% water to cool down the engine when it gets high temperature.

However, Coolant is also used in the car heater mechanism. When you use your car heater, the coolant will be brought to the heater core. In the heater core, the coolant will be heated up. After that it can provide warm air to your car. Some time it will need some minutes until the car heater blows the warm air because the engine need to warm up in order to heat up the coolant. However, when it doesn’t blow any warm air, it is possible that you don’t have enough coolant. When you don’t have enough coolant, it means that the heater core cannot heat up enough coolant to provide warm air.

Heater Core

When your car has enough coolant and your car heater still doesn’t blow warm air, you may suspect another problem. The next thing that you have to check is the heater core. Heater core consists of brass or aluminum tubing that carries the coolant in and out, as well as the fans that blow the warm air. Commonly, the heater core is located in the back of dashboard. When you have problem with the heater core, the coolant cannot travel to the heater core and the warm air cannot be blown properly. Some problems related to heater core are caused by a clog in tubing system. There are some signs that can be recognized when your car has problem in the heater core such as fog inside your car, a fruity odor, overheating engine and the coolant that run out quickly.

Thermostat

Problem that happens in your car heater can also be caused by thermostat that doesn’t work properly. Thermostat is a device that can show whether the engine is in cold and hot status. Commonly, the Thermostat will rise from “C” to “H” after the engine is warmed up. After that the coolant will be sent over the heater core. So, Thermostat is like a signal that tell the coolant when the engine is ready or warm enough. When there is a problem in thermostat, it cannot give any signal to the car when the engine is warm. So the coolant also will not travel through the heater core to provide warm air.

Those are some factors that can explain problem related to the car heater. You need to check each factor the find the problems. Hopefully this information can inform you when you find your car heater blowing cold air.
